09/29/2007 - Atlanta, GA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Travis Bell kicked a pair of field goals and Tashard Choice scored the only touchdown of the game as Georgia Tech pulled off a 13-3 upset of No. 13 Clemson at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Choice, who was questionable for the game with an injured hamstring, rushed for 145 yards on 32 carries for the Yellow Jackets (3-2, 1-2 ACC), who avoided their first 0-3 start in ACC play since 1994.
Quarterback Taylor Bennett completed just 7-of-15 passes for 67 yards with an interception in the victory.
Clemson signal caller Cullen Harper finished 17-of-39 for 194 yards with an interception and was sacked six times, while Aaron Kelly had six catches for 53 yards. James Davis had 12 carries for 60 yards for the Tigers (4-1, 2-1), who were coming off a 42-20 rout of NC State.
The downfall for Clemson was the play of its special teams, which had a punt blocked, fumbled on a kickoff return and saw Mark Buchholz miss four of his five field goal attempts.
Clemson took the early lead, capitalizing on a fumble by Bennett on the first play of the game. Defensive end Phillip Merling recovered, and though the Tigers' drive stalled, Buchholz booted a season-long 48-yard field goal to make it 3-0 just 1:08 into the contest.
On the next drive Buchholz hooked a 47-yard attempt wide left, but the Yellow Jackets then went three-and-out on the ensuing possession.
Georgia Tech made amends, however, blocking a Clemson punt attempt on 4th- and-13, setting the Jackets up just eight yards from the end zone. Three plays later Choice rushed around the right side and scampered two yards for the score, putting Tech up 7-3.
Both sides were plagued by dropped passes in the second quarter, but Harper finally got hot for Clemson, orchestrating what seemed to be a scoring drive in the final minutes of the half. A 15-yard personal foul penalty negated a touchdown, however, and set them back to the Georgia Tech 21 before Harper was sacked. A 15-yard strike to Brian Linthicum on third down set the Tigers up for a 30-yard field goal by Buchholz, but he pulled this one wide right to keep it 7-3 at intermission.
Buchholz had the same result on a 50-yard try to open the third quarter, allowing the Yellow Jackets to widen their lead on their next possession. The team opted to keep the ball on the ground en route to a 47-yard field goal by Bell that made it 10-3 with 5:42 remaining in the stanza.
Clemson went to work after a 21-yard kickoff return by Jacoby Ford, and an 11- yard pass from Harper to Kelly moved the chains on 3rd-and-6. Ford then rushed for no gain, Harper was sacked and a pass to La'Donte Harris went for just eight yards, sending Buchholz trotting back onto the field. His 48-yard field goal attempt missed again.
Georgia Tech tacked on a 41-yard field goal by Bell with 11:38 remaining in the contest, and Morgan Burnett intercepted Harper on third down to halt Clemson's next drive at its own 15.
The Tigers then went three-and-out on their next chance, before Georgia Tech chewed up the final 7:23 of the game clock.
Game Notes

Work left to do: Villanova, Syracuse, DePaul, West Virginia, Providence
Notre Dame and Louisville appear to have done enough to make the move, so we'll make them locks. The Cardinals, despite a modest RPI, are trending way up and have clinched at least a tie for third in the Big East, which should be more than enough with their pair of big road wins. Villanova got back to .500 and gets back to more solid footing. Syracuse got a very important road win and crippled a fellow contender in the process. West Virginia's fate could be in its hands Tuesday at Pitt.
Work left to do:
Villanova [18-9 (7-7), RPI: 21, SOS: 5] Pounded Rutgers to get back to .500. If Cats can get their last two (at UConn, vs. Syracuse), that should be enough with strong computer numbers and a host of wins away from The Pavilion. The Cats have beaten Texas and swept the Big 5 (never easy in Philly), but have a couple of losses to bubble teams (Xavier, Drexel), too. I still think they'll be OK, possibly even at 8-8.
Syracuse [20-8 (9-5), RPI: 53, SOS: 62] History says 10 wins will be plenty, but it might be hard for the Orange to get that last one with a final two vs. G'town, which is trying to win the league title, and at Villanova, which will be desperate for a W. The relative lack of nonconference heft and the weak computer numbers are still concerns, but the Orange have won four in a row and got a very, very big win at Providence on Saturday.
DePaul [16-12 (8-7), RPI: 54, SOS: 18] Beat Cincy and should get past South Florida to get to 9-7, but then what? They have beaten Kansas and Cal (right after the DeVon Hardin injury) earlier this season, but also have lost to Bradley and Purdue, among others. They'll likely need a couple of BE tourney wins, too, but we'll see ...
West Virginia [19-7 (8-6), RPI: 58, SOS: 125] The game at Pitt on Tuesday night could decide the Mountaineers' fate (barring a deep tournament run). They can still get to 9-7 in the Big East without it by beating Cincinnati, but the nine wins would be against UConn, Villanova, St. John's, South Florida, DePaul, Rutgers, Seton Hall twice and the Bearcats. Beating bubble foes is fine, but where's the beef? Outside of beating PG-less UCLA in nonconference play (still a top quality win), there's not a lot to fall back on (besides maybe NC State). WVU vs. Syracuse would be an interesting debate, as the teams don't play in the Big East regular season. WVU has the best win, but Cuse has played the much better schedule.
Providence [17-10 (7-7), RPI: 70, SOS: 33] The Friars likely saw their at-large hopes die at home in the four-point loss to Syracuse, barring an unexpected run to the Big East semis or more. The RPI, bad already, won't be helped by playing St. John's and South Florida in the final two league games.
